Since 2009, Green City Force (GCF) has trained young leaders from low-income housing to power a green and inclusive economy through service. GCF’s Service Corps engages 18–24 year-old low-income housing residents in NYC in full-time, 6-10 month AmeriCorps terms of service and workforce development. These young adults serve fellow community members through large-scale environmental initiatives at Eco-Hubs Powered by GCF, uniquely positioning them to lead community-driven change while gaining key green career skills, certifications, and experience.
GCF Eco-Hubs are rooted in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments across all five NYC boroughs, and the majority of young adults enrolled in our program are themselves NYCHA residents. Program participants lead local projects at GCF Eco-Hubs, educating community members about sustainability and resilience solutions while building their jobs skills. In the last year, over 100 enrolled program participants grew and distributed over 11,000 lbs. of free, organic produce to local NYCHA residents; helped process over 120,700 lbs. of organic waste into compost that was used to grow more food; completed 250 hours of energy training and 70 hours of urban forestry training; and engaged over 2,000 Eco-Hub visitors and volunteers in various sustainability initiatives.
This hands-on training is complemented by classroom instruction in Green City Academy (GCA), providing a foundation for essential workplace and professional development skills. Participants receive a stipend and key certifications like OSHA, GRPRO, and SST, while career and support services continue beyond graduation. Alumni initiatives like our Social Enterprise expose grads to expanding fields while providing a next step job at a living wage. Graduates earn on average $18-25/hr. one-year post-grad and are set up for continued growth. We utilize our four pillars - Service, Training, Sustainability, and Justice - to fulfill our mission to “One day live in green cities where EVERYONE can thrive.”
Every gift is more than a donation - it’s an investment in young leaders across NYC accelerating their futures and empowering their communities.
Donations are tax deductible and directly support our work as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Checks and employer matching donations are also welcome (Green City Force EIN: 800428040).
Thank you for helping to fuel a more equitable and resilient #futuregreencity.
