Propionic Acidemia is an inborn error of metabolism. It is a
rare genetic disease that is included in newborn screening programs around the
world. Individuals with propionic acidemia need improved treatment and a cure. The
Propionic Acidemia Foundation funds research to find better treatments and
provides information and support to families and medical professionals.
I was honored to receive a grant from the Propionic Acidemia
Foundation to advance the research in my group at the Icahn School of Medicine
at Mount Sinai aiming to find a better treatment for Propionic Acidemia. This
year I will run the New York marathon and raise funds for the Propionic
Acidemia Foundation so that they can keep funding promising research projects
in the future.
Thank you very much for your contribution. This means a lot
to families affected by Propionic Acidemia and everyone in the Propionic
Acidemia community.

Personal note
I have been researching rare disease and in particular inborn errors of metabolism for more than 25 years, the majority of my professional life. Many of these disorders including propionic acidemia need better and more effective treatments. I hope that during the remainder of my scientific career, I can keep contributing to this important field. Running is one of the things in life that keeps me healthy and sane. I was lucky to participate in New York marathon in 2018, a memorable experience. I am by no means a competitive runner, but as I am turning 50 this year, it was my wish to run another New York marathon. In addition to my fundraising goal for the Propionic Acidemia Foundation, my other goal is to pace myself this time, but still make it just under 4 hours (9:07 minutes per mile or 5:40 minutes per km). We will see how it goes.
Thank you for your support!
Sander
