Hey all,
Can a BigLaw associate run a sub-three-hour marathon? I think so. Can a BigLaw associate run a sub-three at the 2025 New York City Marathon? Quite possibly—but this one could use your help.
I've committed to supporting the Riverside Park Conservancy through the 2025 NYC Marathon, and I’m reaching out to ask for your help in raising funds for the park and its wonderful programs.
I hadn’t planned to run a full marathon this year, especially after last year’s injury. But somehow, I’ve just gotten faster. This year, I set personal bests in the 4-mile (23:53), 10K (39:06), and half marathon (1:24:29)—all promising signs for someone chasing the elusive sub-three goal. With everything this year has brought, it feels like the right time to give it my all.
I do want to thank everyone who supports the cause—with a little something in a Kickstarter-style (is that still a thing?). For anyone who donates over $100, I’ll offer something in return based on what I (sort of) know: books, taxes, or running.
▪Books: Tell me your MBTI, and I’ll pick a book just for you, with a note explaining why I think you’ll love it. Already read it? Joke’s on me—you’ll get another book, and another note.
▪Taxes: If you (i) are a W-2 employee, (ii) don’t have exotic assets (as determined at my sole discretion), and (iii) have a reasonably normal net worth (also at my discretion), I’ll walk you through tax topics like standard vs. itemized deductions, what the Trump tax rules could mean for you, and tax-advantaged accounts like 401(k), Roth, 529, or HSA.
▪Running: I’ll lead a guided run in Riverside Park or Central Park (up to 13.1 miles), and help you build a race plan—whether you’re aiming for a marathon, half, or even a 5K. We’ll work out something that fits your goals and lifestyle.
And of course, for those who give out of the goodness of their hearts and expect nothing in return, I’ll send a heartfelt handwritten thank-you note.
Like most things I write, this is probably too long—so thanks for reading! You can reach me at hk2915(at)columbia.edu or (threefourseven) 421-0399 with any questions.
