Friends & Family,
I’m excited to be running in the New York City Marathon next month. Running a marathon is no small feat, but this race has a deeper meaning for me. I’ll be running in support of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation & in loving memory of my mom, Janet Price.
The last moments I had with my mom were on the steps of the Coast Guard Academy as she and my dad dropped 18-year-old me off for an intense 8-week “swab summer” indoctrination phase.
I remember the joy of completing the 8-weeks, the eagerness to start the academic year, and finally getting to speak with my family over the phone. She was my first call. She mentioned she was having an unusually bad headache but brushed it off likely for my sake. I had no idea that the very next day, I would be on a flight home after being given the news: At only 52 years old, my mom, Janet Price, lost her life unexpectedly from a ruptured brain aneurysm.
I had no knowledge of what an aneurysm was, and certainly no concept of the prevalence or potential dangers they present. 1 in 50 people has an unruptured aneurysm in the United States (that’s over 6.5 MILLION people)! 30,000 of those rupture each year and an astounding half of those people do not survive. Brain aneurysms are beatable and treatable if detected early. Awareness can and does save lives.
Watching me run and cheering me on at races was one of her favorite things to do, and it would mean a lot to me if you helped honor my mom by supporting me in bringing awareness and advancing brain aneurysm research!
Andrew
