A MESSAGE FROM Connor Kenna's NYC Marathon Fundraising Page
Depression is tough to talk about. However, it shouldn’t be, and there shouldn’t be a stigma around sharing feelings of sadness and seeking help when needed.
In November 2023, my family received the news that after struggling with her mental health my sister died while away for her first semester of college.
My sister Jordan was 18-years old and was a cherished friend, softball teammate, animal lover, summer camp counselor, student, niece, cousin, granddaughter, daughter, and so much more. To me, she was my little sister and my only sibling. Over the past year, those of us who loved Jordan have each struggled. What has helped me get through my sadness and grief is running.
After much thought and consideration, I have made the decision that I want to honor Jordan, and contribute to an organization which aims to dismantle stigmas surrounding mental health, and assists people battling depression, anxiety, and thoughts of self-harm. As a native New Yorker born and raised in Queens, I’ve often thought about running the New York City Marathon, and now I have a reason.
I will be running the New York City Marathon in November 2024 with the organization Minding Your Mind. This organization’s mission of providing mental health education and suicide prevention training in schools, communities, and workplaces across the country is deeply important to me. No person should ever feel alone, and no family should have to endure the loss of someone so young and vibrant. Running for Minding Your Mind is my small contribution to help those struggling have access to mental health resources and assistance. This November I’m running for my little sister and my parents.
Please always remember, the world is a better place with you in it.
Much love,
Connor.
