Hello everyone, I am very excited to run for Team City Harvest in the TCS New York City Marathon on November 7, 2021. I have been a supporter and volunteer for City Harvest. It is a non profit organization that rescues food that would have otherwise gone to waste to feed the hungry in the greater New York City area. In a city with so much abundance, it is surprising that nearly 1.3million New Yorkers - of which 400 thousand are estimated to be children - face hunger or are food insecure. This means they have had to skip one or more meals a day or are not sure where their next meal will come from. Yet so much food continues to go to waste. City Harvest this year will rescue close to 59 million pounds of excess food from restaurants, grocers, bakeries, manufacturers and farms. More than half of which are fresh fruits and vegetables. They deliver this food, free of charge, to 500 community program partners across the city who distribute to those in need. Volunteering at a City Harvest repacking facility I was amazed by the amount and quality of food that can be rescued.
Having grown up in the Philippines where hunger is endemic and with a grand mother and mother that instilled the importance of eating every last grain of rice letting nothing go to waste, I am eager to run 26.2 miles to raise awareness for this cause.
Please help rescue food waste and give it to those in need. Please consider donating and joining me in supporting City Harvest. The City Harvest team of 75 runners has set a goal of raising $275,000 to help feed New Yorkers who are struggling to put meals on their tables. Every donation means a lot and no amount is too small.
My sincerest thanks to you all.
