On
November 7th I will be running the TCS NYC Marathon for the third
time. This year, I am lucky enough to participate
with the team Cellmates on The Run, in association with The Chicago Diabetes
Project. The Chicago Diabetes Project is doing fantastic work trying to make
islet cell transplantation a treatment option for diabetics like myself. As many of you know, I was diagnosed with Type
1 Diabetes in 2006. As I approach my 15 year
anniversary of my diagnosis I continuously remind myself of how far diabetes
care has advanced. My ability to run a
marathon was made exponentially easier due to the advanced research in medicine,
technology and because of organizations like The Chicago Diabetes Project.
Running
the TCS NYC Marathon is particularly meaningful to me this year because it
marks the 50th anniversary of the race, my 15th year as a
diabetic and one of the first major marathons to occur after the COVID-19
pandemic. Working as a nurse in New York City through the pandemic opened my
eyes to the importance of human connection and the true resilient nature of
this city. I cannot think of a better way to recognize
and celebrate this city than by running the marathon for a cause that is close
to my heart.
