Lots of updates!
Hi Everybody! Welcome to May 1st and I wanted to update where I am at with my fundraising, health & run training. First of all, I would like to thank ALL who have contributed to my Breast Cancer Fundraiser to run NYC! I have reached my minimum goal in about 8 weeks, which is absolutely crazy to me. The universe whispered to me that I needed to start fundraising at the beginning of March and share more intimate details of my breast cancer journey. To talk openly about things took courage and timing, as I was fiercely private for about 2 years. I'm able to share my story more openly now as I have become stronger with my health. It is my hope that what I share helps others with their health. I am seeing my immunologist today about the massive allergic reaction I had to IVIG which is for Hypogammaglobulemia (low IgG). My IgG most likely was affected by the strong chemo I received. I won't be getting any infusions this month & we will figure out a plan. I completed steroids last week and have been on very high doses of antihistamines. The rash, swelling and blisters are finally mostly gone. I still haven't been able to put my wedding ring on as their was a rash/swelling/redness all the way around that finger. I am praying that there is another brand or the doctor can get me tested for what I was allergic to in the product. I met with my ND last week as we did a very detailed toxin panel for various chemicals, mycotoxins and heavy metals. I have some weird heavy metals like Cadmium in my system which is probably from all of the fires in Sonoma County. It is from burning metal. Also an organophosphate, which is frustrating as I eat all organic. So-maybe the vineyards and farms around us? And more high mycotoxins. My ND says that this panel would have been off the charts 16 months ago if we had tested before I started any detox protocol. I've been on a detox protocol for the last 16 months, but now I'm on heavy duty supplements to get the rest out. My ND is concerned that I am able to not detox easily, especially with mold. More to come on that part. On better news...I just completed the Big Sur 11 miler run with a friend last weekend! It rained and was cold, but that was good for running. Kept my HR down :) The course was beautiful as the run is along Hwy 1 and is the back half of the marathon. I ran really well and placed 15th out of 100 for my age group. Since I just restarted running in January, I was quite pleased with that. Training now for a hilly half in July with friends.. I am still taking in funds for my fundraiser, so feel free to share or continue to contribute. Once again, I am deeply humbled and grateful for your support. XO Kyla

Latest Health & Fundraising Update
Happy Easter Everyone! An update of how I'm doing :) I had an allergic reaction reaction to my 4th IVIG infusion 9 days ago. After meeting with my doctor, I started steroids and continued high dose anti histamines. The hives and swelling have gone down with just some rashes here and there. It has been somewhat emotional however because I wasn't expecting this kind of reaction. I also don't know if I will be able to get IVIG in a different brand. So until my next doctor appointment, I am staying with the plan. The IVIG was to help me fight infections (mostly respiratory and lung). I'm also meeting with my ND this week. We are working on getting toxins out of my body. I just did another type of toxin panel test and there is still some work to do. But greatly improved from 14 months ago. I may have a genetic resistance to getting mycotoxins (mold) out of my body. I'm going to get tested as this also has been challenging for my immune system. These mycotoxins are bad stuff, but trying to keep me from getting too toxic from exposure is also key. I was able to do a trail run 11 miles on Saturday and body felt good. Also able to do a climbing ride with my husband today. I'm blessed with being able to run and ride in this beautiful county. It gives me joy and strength. It's almost just 6 months to go! Just one year ago I was completing the London Marathon... By meeting this fundraising minimum, I am now able to concentrate on training, sharing my story, continued healing and detoxing. I truly believe I will be fully healed. For now, it is continued faith and commitment to the healing plan. Take good care of yourself and much love to you all. I really appreciate you all <3 Xoxo Kyla

Update!
Hi Everyone! Wanted to give you a quick update about how I'm doing & what's going on with me. I'm currently getting my 4th IVIG infusion right now. I get this once a month for low IgG (immunoglobulin protein that helps fight infections). The chemo most likely caused this problem. It's usually takes a couple of hours once a month & I have to get labs drawn about 5 days before to check my levels. Usually it gives a person an energy boost after, but last month my 3rd treatment hit me hard-most likely because I was fighting a cold. Fingers crossed today! I had my first big athletic weekend last week! Got my 10 mile long run in on Friday, then a 50 mile all women's bike ride with friends in Dublin. The next day, a friend and I hung out at Asilomar on the coast next to Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach. My body is feeling good, but reminders to continually take care of myself. It's easy to fall out of good routine and change of habits, but also good to break from the rituals once in a while to help not feel like it's a drag. That is the point of vacations and mixing things up once in a while. I was really grateful to spend time last weekend with everyone. It was very uplifting. I'm currently still working with my fabulous ND and I just got tested for PFAS, metals, toxins and mycotoxins. I also tested positive for SIBO, but not severe. I will be starting treatment of that in May. The question I have for myself is did all of these things "cause" cancer ('lmycotoxins, candida, chemicals/toxins etc) or were they the result of my immune system. Breast cancer showing up on mammograms has been in the body for while by the time it is discovered. I have a running list of 50+ things that I've eliminated or changed from my diet/lifestyle etc that I know has improved my optimum outcome for this disease. Once again, I am NED and thriving thanks to the hard work and persistence. I have also reached my minimum goal of $5000 to run the NYC marathon. I'm so grateful for all of your support, kindness & generosity. It has been very humbling to be part of the fundraising. While opening up some of my story about this journey, I have had to deal with the emotions that come with it all. It hasn't been easy in anyway to talk about the breast cancer, but if it means I can raise money for research to help others...then I will continue to do so. Have a great weekend everyone. Love you! A MESSAGE FROM Kyla Betts
I am running 26.2 miles for the 1 in 8 women that will be diagnosed with breast cancer!  I too am one of those women. In 2022, I was diagnosed with Triple + Breast Cancer. I underwent a double mastectomy, 18 rounds of chemotherapy & 5 wks of radiation. I've had two more surgeries since then & currently NED!! 7 women in my family have had Breast Cancer, with 2 passing away from the disease including my mom & aunt. The chemotherapy weakened my immune system & I'm now required to have monthly infusions for an antibody called IgG. This will be for life. I'm actively working as an RN, running, cycling, doing yoga & leading a normal life. I'm running to raise important research money for breast cancer, as my life was saved by research. While sitting through my 10 hour chemo sessions, I thought that doing a marathon couldn't be that bad compared to chemo. So, this is how I decided to start running marathons. I have done the CIM & London last 2 years. But this is my first running fundraiser. Won't you please consider making a donation to this very important cause?  No donation is too small. ♥️ Thank you! XOXO
Kyla Joy BSN, RN, wife, fur baby mom, athlete, survivor, activist.
