January 1, 2022 marked 10 years since my epilepsy diagnosis. This May, I will be 10 years grand mal seizure free!
In these 10 years, there is still no cause, and no cure - but The Epilepsy Foundation has drastically helped my journey. My new epileptologist has changed my life. I now have the right tests, right medication, and holistic treatment. Today I deal with the occasional partial seizure, but all these years later, I am very lucky to say my epilepsy remains majority controlled and I have overcome the challenge of accepting my disorder.
I am running to celebrate 10 years, EFMNY, and to spread much needed awareness:
- 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime
- 2 million Americans live with controlled seizure disorders
- 1/3 of people with epilepsy live with uncontrollable seizures.
- For 6 out of 10 people living with epilepsy, the cause is unknown.
- 4 out of 10 people do not receive appropriate treatment for their epilepsy
- 50,000 lives are taken each year by seizure related incidents.
From the Epilepsy Foundation:
"Despite being one of the worldβs oldest known medical conditions, public fear and misunderstanding about epilepsy persist, making many people reluctant to talk about it. That reluctance leads to lives lived in the shadows, lack of understanding about individual risk, discrimination in workplaces and communities, and a lack of funding for new therapies research. For many people living with epilepsy, the misconceptions and discrimination can be more difficult to overcome than the seizures themselves."
I'll never live in the shadows again.
Thank you for your helping me reach my goal, and your support of this incredible group that helps individuals like me and many others across NYC!
