A MESSAGE FROM Yiwen Runs for AAJA: Headlines & Finish Lines
I’m running the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon for AAJA because I believe in the power of diverse voices, especially Asian voices like mine.
Working in media was my dream. I went to college for it, thinking that was the only way to tell stories that matter. And for a while, I did. Then life took me in a different direction. One opportunity led to another, and I left the media industry behind.
But here’s what I learned: carrying a voice doesn’t require a press pass. There’s more than one way to tell a story, and more than one place to be heard.
I spent years in China building a very steady life, but 8 years ago,I threw comfort out the window and started over. I moved to the U.S. without knowing anyone, leaving behind my home country and the media industry I once worked in. I stepped into a new country, a new industry, and a life full of unknowns. Armed only with curiosity, grit, and a belief that beautiful things grow from bold beginnings. Since then, I’ve made friends who feel like family, found purpose in a new career, and built a life I’m proud of.
Training for this marathon is about honoring that journey. It’s not just about running 26.2 miles. It’s about how far I’ve come and what it took to get here. AAJA represents what I care about—representation, inclusion, and the right to tell our own stories. I’m running for the storytellers. For those still finding their voice. For anyone starting something new. And for people who look like me.
