A MESSAGE FROM Emily’s NYC Marathon Fundraising
Running for Community, Culture, and the Next Generation Running has always been part of our family. Our mother ran multiple marathons, and our older sister also completed several marathons as well. Growing up, running wasn’t just a sport for us—it was something we shared with family, friends, and our community. My sister Sarah and I were fortunate to be part of Students Run LA (SRLA) as youth, where we also trained alongside our Indigenous community at the Southern California Indian Center (SCIC). Under the guidance of our late coach, Phil Hale, we built a foundation that went far beyond running. Through the program, we learned discipline, resilience, and the importance of lifting each other up as a community. As teenagers, we ran races ranging from local 5Ks all the way to completing the Los Angeles Marathon in 2010 and 2011 with our group. Those experiences shaped who we are today and showed us what’s possible when young people are supported and encouraged by the people around them. We are proud Indigenous women—Navajo, Pima, and Seneca—who were raised with strong ties to our Native community. Giving back has always been important to us. Over the years we’ve stayed involved in community work, supporting Indigenous programs, teaching beadwork, and advocating for Native people. Now, years later, running has come full circle. We have the incredible opportunity to run the New York City Marathon through Native Strength Revolution, a Native-led running group that empowers Indigenous athletes and brings visibility to our communities. Running 26.2 miles through New York City is more than just a personal goal—it’s a dream we’ve carried since our youth running days. It’s also an opportunity to represent Indigenous runners, honor the mentors who helped guide us, and show the next generation what’s possible. To participate, we are raising $4,500 to support the mission of Native Strength Revolution and help create opportunities for Indigenous runners and community programs. We’ll be sharing our entire journey—from training to race day—on social media through Winnie Goes Rogue on Instagram and TikTok. Our hope is to inspire others in our community to move, run, and believe in their own dreams. Thank you for supporting us as we run for our community, our culture, and the generations to come.
