Hi there! My name is Amber and I'm so proud to be running the 2024 TCS NYC Marathon for the Crime Victims Treatment Center! I'm currently a medical student in New York, and in my free time, I enjoy making grilled cheese sandwiches, playing the New York Times crossword, and playing with my cat!
I choose to run with CVTC because I believe deeply in the amazing work that they do -- providing free mental health and legal support to survivors of violent crime, such as sexual assault and domestic violence.
I first got involved with CVTC as a volunteer advocate in 2020, and to say that it has been my biggest reason for "why medicine" would be an understatement. As a rape crises counselor, I worked directly with survivors in busy NYC emergency departments overnight. Being an advocate with CVTC opened my eyes to how patients experience the healthcare system and it's given me so many skills in empathy, communication, and patient advocacy that I'll take with me throughout the rest of my career as a future physician. In 2023, I also got to work briefly with CVTC's legal team as a legal advocate and learned about how to help survivors navigate the legal system. I helped write petitions for orders of protection and accompanied my clients to court. I even got to testify at a New York City Council meeting about my experience as an advocate and the importance of public funding for organizations like CVTC!
During my time as a former volunteer and employee at CVTC, I've received nothing but the most incredible career support from the CVTC family, from fellow volunteers to the executive director. It's truly an honor and privilege to represent CVTC on race day and raise money for such an incredible organization.
P.S. you can follow along on my training journey on Strava here! I'll be starting from scratch so prepare to see some incredible gains!
A MESSAGE FROM Crime Victims Treatment Center
Since 1977, the Crime Victims Treatment Center has been helping survivors of interpersonal violence heal. Our support comes in the forms of crisis intervention, individual and group trauma-focused therapy, legal advocacy, complementary therapy and psychiatric consultation. We are available from the moments following an assault, all the way through the culmination of a survivor's healing process. All of our services are confidential and completely free of charge.
By giving to CVTC, you're making a life changing difference for a survivor of violence, and for our community.
CVTC provides cutting-edge healing services to anyone impacted by violence. We prioritize people who would be unable to pay for the things we offer. When you support CVTC, you’re not only making a profound impact on the 1,800 people who come to our office each year, you’re making a profound impact on their families, their friends, their neighborhoods and communities. Your impact is multiplied by the hundreds of thousands of people who are supported by the 15,000 individuals we train each year. This is how change happens, and this is your opportunity to be a part of it.
