A MESSAGE FROM Alyssa's 2026 NYC Marathon Fundraiser
Five years ago, I would have never believed that I’d be accepted into a Psychology PhD program, let alone be on the path to becoming a doctor (of philosophy)! That disbelief wasn’t born from lack of ambition, but from a lifetime of quiet self-doubt. As an Asian American woman, my journey began with lifelong obstacles and glass ceilings. I spent much of my early life questioning my worth and whether I belonged in spaces that didn’t always reflect or serve me. Yet here I am, nearing the finish line of my program, which has been a true mental marathon that has tested my endurance, resilience, and self-trust every step of the way.
I think my doctorate journey has officially made me unhinged—because now I’m ready to take on another kind of marathon: a physical one! I’m running the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon with Team for Kids, an organization that empowers youth and communities through the transformative power of running. For me, running mirrors what I’ve learned through psychology: that growth happens through discomfort, that progress is never linear, and that we are capable of far, far more than we imagine. I’m running to honor the moments I share with my clients and students every day-- about persistence, self-compassion, and trusting the process; to celebrate the friends, family, and loved ones who have carried me this far; and, just as importantly, to prove to my younger self that I can do anything I set my mind to.
Your support will help Team for Kids continue providing programs that inspire children to develop confidence, resilience, and passion; the same qualities that have carried me through my academic and personal journey.
Thank you for helping me run toward a future where every child, no matter who they are or where they come from, feels empowered to chase their above and beyond their perceived finish lines.
