My beautiful wife Maria was diagnosed with lupus one year after we were married at the age of 21,15 years ago. She spent her 22nd birthday in the hospital, a stay that lasted over 30 days, awaiting the diagnosis for the horrible symptoms she was dealing with. A doctor finally entered the hospital room on the Third week of her stay and gave her news that would change her life forever. While holding tears back he said “I have a daughter your age and couldn’t imagine having to say this to her. You have SLE lupus.” She looked at him relieved that the medical team figured out what it was, yet she was unaware that lupus was something she’d likely have to live with for the rest of her life. With confidence she said “Ok. I have faith that I’ll get better. From that moment on, her life as a person with lupus and mine as a Lupus caregiver has been a rollercoaster of great moments and character building moments. The latter are sometimes the scariest as I watch the person I love most in the world suffer from excruciating pain and the side effects of every new medicine she is given to help treat the symptoms. Unfortunately we do not know what caused this,and that is why I decided to run for this charity and help raise funds for research, and eventually for finding a cure. So that my wife and everyone else suffering and living with this horrible diagnosis can one day soon live a lupus free life.
